Reiki is a gentle yet powerful natural healing technique.

The word Reiki (pronounced 'ray-key') originates from two Japanese words “Rei” and “Ki” meaning “universal life energy”, also known as “chi” in China and “prana” in India. This energy flows through all living things and is vital to our well-being.

When we experience physical, emotional or mental health imbalances we are experiencing an imbalance in this energy. Reiki promotes the body’s regenerative self-healing ability restoring balance on all levels; physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

The healing system known today as Reiki originated in Japan. In the late 1800’s Dr Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist, rediscovered this Tibetan Buddhist healing system. Reiki was brought to America in the 1930’s and since then has spread throughout the west.

Reiki's gentle energy can be used safely by people of all ages, including the newborn, pregnant mothers, surgical patients, the frail and the elderly, in any situation, with any medical condition.

It is a non-invasive therapy that can be used alongside other complementary therapies and conventional medicine because it works in a natural way. However, it should not be used as an alternative to conventional medicine. You should therefore always consult your GP about acute infectious conditions and in connection with problems of an urgent nature.

Reiki is currently being used in various settings including private practice, complementary therapy centres, GP surgeries, hospitals, hospices, cancer support groups, post-operative recovery, drug rehabilitation, prisons, HIV/AIDS centres and in the care of the elderly.
